Kathleen
Tierney McKAY June 1, 1930 - November 22, 2003 Katie
McKay happily returned to God on Saturday in the presence
of her large family. Trained as a nurse (BSN, St. Catherine's
Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska, 1950), Katie loved being a
mom, much to the benefit of her 12 children, and continued
her "backyard practice" for more than 30 years
on Capitol Hill. She met her husband, Dr. John McKay
(1921-1989), when they were both in school, during an
autopsy. Any relationship which began in this way was
destined to be long and fruitful. And it was. They were
married in 1950 at St. John's Church on the Creighton
University campus in Omaha and returned to Seattle to
start a family and a career. Katie's life was her faith
and her family. Katie was active in her church, playing
many roles at St. Joseph's, including a term on the Parish
Council. She participated in the development and implementation
of Hospice at Providence Hospital. The original soccer
mom, she attended ballgames, organized homework study
sessions, and coached speech tournament participants.
She instilled in her children the importance of service
to others, a charge which they have followed in many
different ways over the years. Katie joins husband John,
her grandchildren, Jack and Colleen Ryan, and her brother,
Francis, in Heaven. She leaves behind her children Mike,
Mary Vial (Pete), Brian (Debi), Joanne Fleming (Jim),
John, Bill (Chris), Kathleen (Phil), Julie, Sheila Ryan
(Tom), Tricia, Danny (Gretchen), and Richard, 24 grandchildren,
two brothers (Bill and Gene), and a sister (Joan). Funeral
Mass will be on Wednesday, November 26, 2003, at 1:00
p.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 700 18th Avenue East, Seattle.
